David P. Devries

David Paul DeVries 61, passed away Friday, January 5th, 2018 at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Dave was born October 5th, 1956 in East St. Louis, IL to Donald and Shirley (Borcherding) DeVries. He graduated from Hampton High School and North Iowa Community College in Mason City with a degree in Electrical Drafting. He married Jerri Marie Kutchen in 1990 and together they had two children, Quin and Baylie. In 2013 Dave married Leslie Walter and blended their two families with summer adventures at Lake Okoboji. Dave lived most of his adult life in the Des Moines area and worked as an electrical drafting for his entire career until he retired in 2016. Dave enjoyed model railroading and woodworking. Over the years, he designed and built many beautiful pieces of furniture. He was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand with his natural talent for any DIY project. Dave was a dedicated father who cherished every moment of his children’s (Quin and Baylie) lives. He was a remarkable husband to Leslie, and a loving step-father to his two step-daughters (Julia and Madeline). In 2015 Dave was diagnosed with lung cancer, which he fought valiantly and positively. He is survived by his wife Leslie, son Quin, daughter Baylie, stepdaughters Julia (Jordan) Sonntag and Madeline Walter; brother Dan (Becky) DeVries, sister Jenene (Graeme) Armstrong, and four nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and former wife. The visitation will be held Tuesday, January 9th from 4 -7 p.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home at 8201 Hickman Rd, Urbandale, IA 50322. Inurnment will be Wednesday, January 10th at 10 a.m. at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, IA. Memorials will be directed to John Stoddard Cancer Center.
