David was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on September 23, 1940, the son of Louis and Kathryn (Benjamin) DuBois. David grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from Maine Township High School in Park Ridge, Illinois in 1958. He later graduated from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in business and minor in psychology. David and Diane (Boehme) were married September 5, 1964 and celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this past fall. Together they raised a daughter Dawn and son Dale, making their home in the Des Moines area since 1972. Family played a central role in David’s life, with his immediate family enhanced by many dear “adopted” children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and was loved in return.
David was a man of faith, actively involved in the Des Moines Vineyard Church for many years. He considered the church community family. He readily shared his love of God with others, participating in prison ministries, teaching Sunday school, assisting friends in need, cooking meals, and cleaning the church. David was outgoing and sociable, he never knew a stranger, and relished talking with anyone – anywhere. He did not hesitate to share his opinions (some would say hardheaded), yet abundantly generous with sharing his love, time, and energies.
Professionally, David worked for many years as a salesman in the agricultural industry, followed by the home improvement sector, culminating in retirement from Home Value in Des Moines in 2006. David’s passion for reading and appreciation for many genres of music date to childhood, including being a talented classical and jazz trombonist. He had a great affection for animals (as illustrated by a series of family dogs and cats over time) and knew the name of every dog in the neighborhood. He loved to cook and grill for family and friends, often experimenting with new recipes. He had a green thumb, devoting attentive care to his many indoor plant “babies”.
David was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Donald Kovach. He is survived by his beloved wife Diane; daughter Dawn DuBois (Chris Hord) of Lee's Summit, Missouri; son Dale (Virginia Sanders) of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren, Nicholas Sanders and Isabella DuBois; sister Mary Jane Kovach of Des Plaines, Illinois; nephew Bradford (Patricia) Kovach of Mount Prospect, Illinois and their sons Daniel and Kevin; the Hunt, Waugaman, and Harder families; as well as many dear friends.
