David Williams

December 28, 1940 — February 18, 2020

David Larry Williams was born on December 28, 1940 to David Amos Williams and Ruth Genevieve (Sylvester) Williams in Fargo, ND. He was an only child. As a young adult he served in the Army Reserves during which he played in the Army band and he earned a degree in psychology from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. While living in Minneapolis he met and married Winifred Ann (Powers) Williams December 26, 1970. They had three children: Elizabeth Ann, Brian Davis (who died shortly after birth), and Patrick Jay. Dave's work in sales with Hil-Rom medical supply took them to Duluth, MN where there was a lot of snow but he loved Lake Superior and downhill skiing. Dave's work took his family to Des Moines, IA in 1978 and they lived in a new house in the suburb of Urbandale. He and Winnie divorced in 1987. Dave met Kay at a music event in 1994 and they were married May 24, 1997. He was lovingly welcomed into Kay's large family. Dave and Kay married and lived in their home in Cobblestone since then. They enjoyed traveling, epically to Yosemite National Park, and eating in Des Moines restaurants on their Friday night dates. Dave worked in sales his whole career, notably with Advanced Machine and Tool Company in Des Moines for many years. Dave then worked for Flighttags, from which he retired. Dave loved music and was an accomplished trumpet player, playing in many local bands over the years including Urbandale Community Band, Plymouth Brass, Iowa Military Veterans Band, his own brass quintet that played classical compositions for church services and private events, and finally played lead trumpet for the Community Jazz Center Big Band for many many years. He is preceded by his son, Brian; his parents and and step-son, Jerry Thorpe. He is survived by his wife, Kay; children, Liz (John Webb) Williams Webb, Pat (Meghan Glennon) Williams; step-children, Jackie Aldrich, Patti (Mark) Cooper, Doug (Judy) Thorpe, David (Vickie) Thorpe; stepdaughter-in-law, Gina Thorpe; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
