Delores Lucille Young (Sorry that the wrong picture was placed on Delores's website) Delores Lucille Young was born February 10, 1925 in rural Shickley Nebraska to parents Teckla Harnett and John Hendrickson, and died March 15, 2012 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson at the age of 87years, 1 month, and 4 days. Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, in Jefferson, Iowa. The Church Pastor Rev. Julia Poulsen provided words of comfort. Casket bearers were Andy Hobart, Ted Semke, Tom Semke, Spencer Semke, Carter Semke, Nick Daniel and Dusty Farnsworth. Music was provided by Danille Curtis at the piano and Larry Dowd as soloist. The songs were Just a Closer Walk With Thee and The Old Rugged Cross, the Usher was Arlon Yepsen. The burial was at the Jefferson Cemetery. Delores graduated from Shickley High School in 1943. After attending a junior college for a semester, she taught school in the one room schoolhouse that she, her brother and sister attended as youngsters. She later moved to Superior, Nebraska where she met her future husband at a World War II dance. On January 18, 1945, she was united in marriage to Keith Semke of rural Mankato, Kansas. To this union, four children were born, Dennis, Terry, Connie and Mike. After moving to Jefferson in 1959, Delores joined the workforce. She worked for Finch Chevrolet, American Athletic, Schaal Truck Stop and S& M Finance. In 1968 she went to work for Community Opportunities and retired in 1993 after 25 years. In late 1967 she and Keith divorced. Delores married Duane Young on August 28, 1968. Delores enjoyed her work with the community. She especially enjoyed helping those that needed assistance with everyday living. She enjoyed traveling to visit relatives in Nebraska and New Mexico. Until 1999 she never missed her high school reunion in Shickley. Delores and Duane enjoyed traveling in the winter and doing some golfing. They also enjoyed playing cards with friends. Delores was a member to The United Methodist Church and Lakeside Golf Club. Delores enjoyed playing slots at Prairie Meadows. She loved playing the piano or organ. For a time, she was a member of a local band that played around the Jefferson area. Since October of 1998, following a stroke after heart by-pass surgery, she has lived her life at the Greene County Medical Center in the long-term care unit. Delores was preceded in death by her parents, brothers David and Kenneth and sister Dorothy. Delores is survived by her husband Duane Young of Jefferson; one daughter Connie Semke of Jefferson; three sons Dennis Semke ( Marg) of New Hope Village in Carroll; Terry Semke ( Kathy) of Jefferson; and Mike Semke( Peggy) of Jefferson; step-children: Cherin Lee (Bob) of Cedar Falls; Cathy Nelson of Iowa City ; Tom Young ( Ilene) of Olathe, Kansas; and Barb Hobart (Doug) of Adel, and 5 grandchildren Lori, Ted, Tom, Erin and Dusty, seven step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, one sister Lorraine Martin of Mesa, Arizona; and sister-in-law Pat (Ken) Hastings of Jefferson other relatives and many friends The United Methodist Women served a lunch at the Church after the burial.
