Donald Dwaine Welch, 95, of Winterset, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Don was born on August 5, 1924 in Adair County, Iowa to Henry George Welch and Della Irene (Harris) Welch. The family moved to Madison County when Don was young and in 1943, he graduated from DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Iowa. Because of health problems, Don was not drafted into WW II. Don was a life-long farmer, first working for Cy McDonald, Sr., and then in 1947 went to work for Guye Farms with Dorothy and Eldridge Guye. They were looking for someone to help out with about 2 weeks worth of work. As it turned out, Don never left until he retired in 2000. In 1952 Don was seriously injured when he got his arm caught in a round bailer. When Eldridge died in 1968, Don stayed on the farm to work for Dorothy. He loved his pets, especially his dogs. He also loved working in the field and with the cattle, but did not like working with the hogs. When Don retired, he moved to town. He enjoyed bowling and watching his favorite team, the New York Yankees, play. He was never one to let people know that the Yankees were his favorite team. In 2001, Don married Florence McCauley Stalheim. She passed away in 2017. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Martha Irene Barber; and brothers, Howard Welch and Dale Welch. He is survived by a step son, Marty “Wolf” McCauley. Funeral services for Don will be 10 AM Wednesday, November 27, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home Winterset Chapel with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Madison County Health Care System.
