Donald Cook passed away peacefully on January 1, 2024, at home, with his family by his side.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home - Adel Chapel, 735 S. 14th St., Adel. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Don was born on February 3, 1936, in Waukee, to Alexander Cook and Mildred (Harris) Cook.
The family moved to Adel when Don was in Second Grade. Don graduated from Adel High School in 1956, where he excelled in numerous sports. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Jane Jones of Dallas Center, on November 23, 1956 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee. Don played fast pitch softball for the Adel Merchants and was an avid bowler at Horseshoe Lanes. He also was an active golfer well into his eighties at Hillcrest Country Club, where he was a member for over 50 years and hit a hole-in-one. Don took many fishing trips to Canada with friends. He enjoyed cheering on the Green Bay Packers and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Don was a charter member of the men's morning coffee club at the Corner Tap.
Don worked for the Iowa DOT for 10 years, then went on to Iowa Power and Light/MidAmerican Energy, where he retired after 29 years of service. He was a proud member of the IBEW Local 499.
Don and Mary Jane loved to travel, play golf and spend time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Adel; his two children, Melody (Clarke) Marshall and Tim (Linda) Cook, both of Adel; four grandchildren, Colton (Betsy) Marshall of Waukee, Carson Marshall of Waukee, Allie Cook of Des Moines and Sam (Rachel) Cook of North Carolina; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard, William "Bump" and Doug and one sister, Linda (Cook) Peck.
