Donald Earl Hastie, son of Earl Everett Hastie and Grace Bolle Hastie, was born December 23, 1912 in Perry, Iowa and died September 18, 2009 at Panora Nursing and Rehab in Panora, Iowa, where he had resided one week, at the age of 96 years, 9 months, 25 days. Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Hastings Funeral Home, Perry, Iowa. Rev. Clare DeBoef of First United Methodist Church, Perry, Iowa presided and gave the words of comfort with Brenner Myers delivering the eulogy for his grandfather. Honorary casket bearers were Linda Dahl, Marcia Murphy, Kris Laidley, Kelly Kenney, Amy Frederick, Danielle Murphy, Ranae Murphy, Suan Laidley, Mickell Gerth and Heather Thompson. Casket bearers were Steve Laidley, Brenner Myers, Jeffrey Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Bill Dahl, Adam Frederick and Ryan Gerth. Chuck Schott sang and played, What A Friend We Have In Jesus andJust A Closer Walk With Thee. Burial was at Violet Hill Cemetery,Perry, Iowa. The ladies of First Christian Church of Perry provided and served a lunch at Hastings Funeral Home Lounge after the services. Donald attended Liberty Rural School northeast of Angus. He was a farmer and loved to drive truck. Donald worked for Les Martinie and had fond memories of trucking during the wheat runs. He also had been a pilot which he enjoyed very much and told his family the story of his plane being confiscated by the government during WWII. He married Winifred Alice Flinn on December 27, 1930 at Rev. Morse's home in Angus. They were blessed with three daughters, Patsy, Darlene, and Judy. The family made their home north of Angus in Boone County for ten years. They then moved to a farm north of Perry and later made their home east of Dawson on a farm. In 1974 Donald and Winifred moved into Perry. After Winifred's death in 1997, Donald continued to be active with his family and friends. He was a member of First Christian Church in Perry. Donald enjoyed working on machinery, trading cars, and collecting trains and toy tractors. He also liked Iowa history and playing the organ. In addition to his wife, Donald was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Judy Myers and her husband Larry, son-in-law Jerry Murphy, brother Leslie and wife Leona, grandsons Kyle Myers, Craig Murphy, Michael Murphy, great grandson Christopher Murphy, and nephew Ron Hastie. Donald is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughters Patsy Laidley and husband Bob of Stuart, Iowa; Darlene Murphy of Perry, Iowa; grandchildren: Linda Dahl and husband Bill; Steve Laidley and wife Kris; granddaughter-in-law Marcia Murphy; Jeffrey Murphy; and Brenner Myers. He is also survived by great grandchildren: Kelly Kenney and husband Stephen; Amy Frederick and husband Adam; Suan Laidley and wife Laura; Mickell Gerth and husband Ryan; Ryan Murphy and wife Lisa; Danielle Murphy; Ranae Murphy; and Heather Thompson and husband Josh; 10 great-great grandchildren; niece Pat Hastie; other relatives and friends.
