Donald Howard Haynes

Donald Howard Haynes passed away at the age of 94 on August 9, 2016 at 8:15 pm, due to complications of a stroke. He was surrounded by his loving family when he went home to be with his devoted wife Mae, son Robert and his Holy Father. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2016 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel with burial at Walnut Township Cemetery in Waukee. Friends may call after Noon Sunday, August 14 at the funeral home where family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Donald was born on September 19, 1921 in Cherokee, Iowa to Albert and Grace (Miles) Haynes. At 5 months of age his mother passed away. In his early years he was raised in Lamoni, Iowa by his aunt until his father remarried Ruth. On September 17, 1941 at 8:15 pm he married Mae Roach whom he met in church and they remained married 66 years until her passing 2007. Don was drafted to serve on Sept 19, 1942 and ended his service on November 2, 1945. During his WW2 service he was stationed in the Pacific theater as part of the invasion force on the coast of Japan. During this time he would write his new bride 5-10 letters a week. He enjoyed gardening, attending blue grass music events, and spending time with his grandchildren. Donald was the epitome of goodness. We are all blessed we had him in our lives as a role model and as a hallmark for us to measure all our actions. Don was predeceased by great granddaughter Brooklyne (1994), son Robert (2016), wife Mae Haynes (2007) and sister Helen Louise Haynes (1926). Don is survived by sons, Donald (Jody), William (Ella) daughters, Ruth Bowans, Becky (Scott) Carstensen, (Vicky) Sue Haynes; brother, Alan Haynes (Veda) and sister, Hazel Davenport. He has 9 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren. At the time of his passing he had been living with his companion Betty Bennett.
