Don Stephen of Adel passed away January 24th at age 88. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 28th at the First Christian Church in Adel. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Private family burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery at a later date. Don was born in Des Moines to Floyd and Josephine Stephen in 1928. He grew up on the south side of Des Moines and attended Lincoln High School until his junior year when he moved to Oskaloosa and graduated. In 1949 he married Mickie Van Pelt at the Little Brown Church. In 1958 they moved their family to Adel where they owned and operated Stephen Cleaners for 50 years. Don retired at the age of 80. Don was very active in supporting his community and everyone knew him. He was a proud volunteer of the Adel Fire Department for over 25 years. He was also a very active father and grandfather. He loved to be outdoors with his family camping, boating, fishing, and barbequing. All that knew Don know that he was a Fairgoer. He never missed an Iowa State Fair where he camped with his family and friends. Don is survived by his wife Mickie; daughters, Jan Ohrt (Darrell) and Linda Clark (Nick Houseman); grandchildren, Jason (Shari), Kami, Jamie, Andy, Amy; great grandchildren, Ashley, Wyatt, Kaitlyn, Michael and brother, Dick (Evelyn). He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mike; son-in-law, Randy Clark and sister, Marge Lathrop. Memorial contributions may be directed to Adel Fire Department or for a memorial bench at the fairgrounds. Online condolences may be left on this site.
