Donna Jean Grove - Adel

Donna Jean Grove, 72, passed away peacefully Monday, September 8 at Methodist Hospital with her family by her side. Donna was born September 17, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa to Josephine and John T. McGill. Donna graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1959. Donna is survived by her children: Jeff (Theresa) Grove, Jason (Nikki) Grove, Joy (Shawn) Chamberlain; six grandchildren, and two great grand children. After graduating she worked at Allied Insurance Company before marrying Loyd Grove on September 30, 1960. They took over "Grovey's Cafe" in Adel, which became an Adel icon over twenty years. It was this local cafe where so many friendships, stories and memories were formed. We remember the betting boards, the diet duds, and the ever famous RED COATS that painted the athletic stands throughout the 1970's. It was more than a common restaurant, it was part of the community where family and friends gathered to share stories. Donna then began a new path and started the beginning of a new family at Dowling Catholic High School. Students and staff soon learned of the new lady running the lunch program who had such a passion for everyone. This chapter in her life lasted for 20 years. Though her career was complete, the friendships and bonds never stopped. It was through these last days that our family was overwhelmed by the support of the staff and former students of Dowling. Her retirement began in 2006. During these years her concentration was on her family and grandchildren along with a continued support at the Adel Christian Church. Donna had a strong faith and a heart that would be shared with everyone. The First Christian Church of Adel was a passion and she was deeply involved with the church. Some of her key roles or memberships were Worship Committee, Elder, and Treasurer. Donna has kept busy with Christian Women's Fellowship, Steadfast Circle, Quilting Group, Women's Club and WCT (card club). She started the Red Hat Ladies group in Adel. Her greatest passion and greatest gift, was her love of all people and her desire to make them feel special. Funeral Services will be 10:00am Monday September 15, 2014 at the ADM old middle school gym.(12th and Rapids in Adel) with burial at Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Sunday September 14th, 2014 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 2pm to 6pm with prayer service at 6pm. Any donations or memorial can be made to the Donna Grove Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank. Online condolences may be left at this site.
