Doris Louise Kipping - Redfield

Doris L. Snyder was born in the farm home of her family near Adel 100 years ago on August 18, 1913. She enjoyed celebrating her milestone birthday at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center, where she most recently lived. Doris was raised in the rural Redfield area with parents Milo and Phoebe Dillworth (Crouse) Snyder in their family of ten children. Her schooling was in the one-room country school close to their home through 8th grade. She graduated from High School in Redfield, and attended summer school teacher training at the Iowa State Normal School in Cedar Falls, IA. She taught in several local country schools until 1942 when she and James Kipping, a former high school classmate, were married. They started farming near Adel, until Jim was drafted into the army late that year. She accompanied Jim to the various locations where he was stationed during his army service, and their first child, Louise, was born in Fresno, California. After a deployment to Guam, the family returned to Iowa to a farm north of Redfield in 1946. Three more children, Jeanie, Stephen, and Irene, were born, making the Jim Kipping family six in number! Doris was a meritorious farm wife and mother; she was attentive and loving to her family and her extended family. Doris's kindness, gracious nature, and willingness to serve were felt in many church and community functions. During her adult life, she was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Redfield. Fun and meaningful activities involving friends, relatives, and gatherings of many kinds were frequent happenings in the Kipping home. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, her son, Stephen, and eight siblings. She is survived by her sister Mary (Melvin) Swinger, her three daughters, Louise Kipping, Jeanie (James) Timmerman, and Irene (Joel) Jensen, and many nieces and nephews to whom she was a loving aunt. Doris is also survived by six grandchildren: Stephanie (David) Sanderlin, Amy (Lukas)Vanasse, Michael and Daniel Timmerman; Michelle and Renee Jensen. Doris was blessed to see the arrival of four great grandchildren: Jayna, Thea,Toby Vanasse and Terrik Timmerman. As a testament to her positive and deep impact on their lives, all six grandchildren and two of Doris's great-grandchildren traveled to Iowa from Alaska and California to celebrate her 100th birthday. "No matter how long we may live, to live well, we must live close to God." This quote, taken from one of many journals in which Doris wrote quotes, anecdotes and "words of wisdom," indicates what led Doris through her days. Her Christian faith, in which she lived and grew, was an important and vital part of her life. She was an inspiration to many and leaves a legacy of blessing to those who knew her. Friends may call anytime after noon on Sunday, Oct 13th at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 2-5 pm. A celebration honoring Doris's life will be 11am Monday, Oct. 14th at McCalley Funeral Home. Burial will be at the East Linn Cemetery north of Redfield.
