Doris Marie Hesseltine

January 1, 1930 — September 5, 2017

Doris was born in Des Moines, Iowa on December 10, 1930. She entered Heaven’s gates on September 5, 2017. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Adel United Methodist Church 115 South 10th Street, Adel. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 8 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated following the service. A consummate mother and homemaker, Doris was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends, particularly at Christmas time when she hosted a Christmas open house. Her homemade fudge sold for a high price during many church fundraising auctions. She also loved to play games that included numerous cards games, Mah Jong, and Bingo. She was a fan of baseball and enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs. Doris had an unwavering faith in God. She was very involved with church and worked along with her loving husband of 68 years, Lester Hesseltine, a Methodist minister. She assisted with church activities by serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, and singing in the church choir . Doris was predeceased by her parents; 5 siblings and her granddaughter, Tara Hesseltine. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Lester; by her daughter, Jeri Lewis (Bob); her sons, Dennis (Rita); and David (Jody); her four grandchildren Lisa, Mark, Adam and Rachel; and her five great grandchildren, Trevor, Thomas, Mason, Jade, and Sophie. The family would like to thank Hospice of the Midwest for their care of Doris and the many people who came to visit with Doris during her final days. As a very social woman, she enjoyed the visits from her numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Doris knew no stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She was also known as the family peacemaker. “Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God.” – Matthew 5:9. Doris was certainly a child of God and our earth became a better place because she walked among us. Memorial contributions in Doris’ honor may be made to Adel United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be left on this site.
