A service was held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the Rippey United Methodist Church for Dorothy Marie Devilbiss. Visitation was 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. Rev. Enna Antunez of the United Methodist Churches provided words of comfort. Dorothy's honorary bearers were: Jalean Crosby, Kellea Devilbiss, Noah Devilbiss, Mary Ann Miller, Karen Kinney, Doris Tipton, Kathleen Linn, Ron Stewart and Jerry Groves. Casket bearers were: J.D. Devilbiss, Mark Devilbiss, Berthal Devilbiss, Joash Devilbiss, Gideon Devilbiss and Allan Coffin. Jerald Fessler and Dennis Ulrich were the Ushers at Dorothy's service. Marjorie Vanatta and Brenda Roberts played "How Great Thou Art", "On Eagle's Wings" and "The Old Rugged Cross" during service. Interment for Dorothy Devilbiss took place in Rippey at the Rippey Cemetery. Following the service a lunch was held at the Rippey United Methodist Church. Dorothy Marie Devilbiss daughter of James Coffin and Iva Hoeye Coffin, was born July 18, 1918 in Adel, Iowa and died September 2, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 94. Dorothy went to rural Adel schools growing up. She was the youngest of 5 children. On January 16, 1937 Dorothy married Berthal LaVerne Devilbiss. They had 2 sons Keith and Norman. The family lived 1 miles West of Linden, then 1 miles West of Shiloh Church off the Dawson road. They moved to Rippey November 1950 to the "Brown" place, then in 1960 to their farm east of the Co-op. Dorothy worked the lunch program at Rippey and retired from East Greene School in 1980. She also mowed her own lawn for 36 years. Dorothy was a very positive lady who was always smiling. She belonged to the Rippey United Methodist Church and Alice Blue Rebekah Lodge. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, collecting plates, square dancing, and visiting with her friends and family. She will be remembered as a wonderful cook and her boys loved her chicken & noodles. Dorothy made the decision to move to Spring Valley Retirement Home 3 years ago next January. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents James Coffin and Iva Hoeye Coffin; husband Berthal LaVerne Devilbiss (1975); 2 brothers Edgar Coffin and Gordon Coffin and sister Gertrude Kuehast. Dorothy will be remembered always by her 2 sons Keith Devilbiss of Rippey, Norman (Diana) Devilbiss of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 6 grandchildren: Kent Devilbiss, J.D. (Billie) Devilbiss of Oklahoma, Mark (Cindy) Devilbiss of Perry, Kellea Devilbiss of Minneapolis, Jalean Crosby of Norfolk, VA, and Berthal Devilbiss of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 10 great-grandchildren: Joash, Gideon, Noah, Megan, Melinda, Luke, Elizabeth, Colton, Hunter, and Emilee; great-great-granddaughter Tiggen Devilbiss; sister Coral Lenze of Adel, sister-in-laws: Helen Evans of Des Moines and Hazel Barnes of Dexter, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. www.hastingsfh.com
