Dorothy Howard

Dorothy Howard, 91, of Dallas Center, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023 at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home with visitation being held one hour prior beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Laurel Hill Cemetery. Dorothy was born on July 23, 1932 in Des Moines to Harry and Grace (Barry) Beckman. She graduated from East High School in 1950 and went to work at Bankers Life. In 1951 she married Randall Howard and became a stay-at-home mom to care for her children.

Dorothy was a long-time member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church and was a member of the choir. She went to work  part-time at Hawkins Greenhouse in Des Moines from 1961 to 1971.  She left there to work full time at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny, where she retired after 26 years.

Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, reading, bird-watching, shopping, and lunching with Sheryl and friends.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Steven (Susie) Howard of Greenwood, IN; daughter, Sheryl (Terry) Eickelberg of West Des Moines; 5 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; her long time friend, Ivan Myers; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Grace Beckman; infant sister, Evelyn; sister, Bernice; and brothers, Willard and Eugene.
