Dorothy Jean Garrett

Dorothy Jean Garrett passed away on Friday, October 21, 2016. She was born in Waukee, Iowa on December 28, 1945. She attended school in Waukee until the middle of her junior year when she began taking correspondence courses from the American School in Chicago, IL so she could graduate early and start working. She graduated in January, 1963. In April, 1966 Dorothy received her Key Punch Certificate from the College of Automation in Des Moines, IA. Her pets were her love and joy and she was truly the mother of all animals. In addition to her pets, Dorothy enjoyed tennis, bowling, dancing, basketball, ceramics, reading, and cake decorating. For years she baked a birthday cake each month to celebrate the resident’s birthdays at Goodwill West. Dorothy worked for various companies in Des Moines, Iowa until she found her forever job at Wells Fargo. She had a long and successful career there and made many life-long friends. After almost 29 years at Wells Fargo Dorothy retired in February, 2009 to care for her brother full time and enjoy more time with her beloved pets. She is survived by her brother, Robert (Bob) Garrett and her cousin Imogene Sutton (Dan). She also leaves behind other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Birtie Washington Garrett and Vera Grace (Wicks) Garrett. Dorothy requested no funeral but friends and relatives may pay their respects Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at McCalley Funeral Home, 735 S. 14th Street, Adel, IA. A private burial will take place at Colfax Township County Cemetery behind Panther Creek Church of Brethren outside Adel, Iowa. Donations may be made in Dorothy’s name to the Polk County Animal Rescue League, 5452 NE 22nd Street, Des Moines, IA 50313. Online condolences may left on this site.
