Dorothy Marberry, 93, passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 with her husband by her side. Dorothy was born on August 20, 1924 on her family’s farm located near Bethany, Illinois. She was the youngest of seven children born to Frank and Iva Dean (Perkins) Stewart. She was a graduate of Bethany High School and the Business College located in Champaign, Illinois. Dorothy met her husband, Charles, through a blind date set up by his best friend and his wife, who happened to be one of Dorothy’s sisters. After the dinner date, Charles informed his best friend, "I swear on a Bible that I am going to marry that girl." That prophecy came true on November 30, 1943 in Sana Ana, California. Dorothy and Charles were stationed at various airfields throughout California during his service. The couple eventually settled in Iowa City, Iowa where Dorothy was a stay at home mom and also co-owned a business that published cookbooks. She was very active in civic and social groups in the Iowa City area and was on the Board of Directors for the Solon Methodist Church. She was a very outgoing and social individual who loved to sing and dance (including competitive tap dance). Dorothy, Charlie and their friends spent many a night celebrating the night away around the piano. In their final years, Dorothy and her husband lived at Legacy Pointe in Waukee, Iowa where she was very active in programs and events put on by the facility. As one staff member noted, "Dottie participates in many activities throughout the day and is always quick to pay lovely compliments to those around her." Dorothy was a very vibrant person whose passing leaves a void in those who were fortunate to have known her. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 73 years, Charles; son, Douglass (Janet) Marberry; daughter, Constance Marberry; grandchildren, Tyler Marberry, Sam Naylor, Eli Naylor, Zoey Naylor; and great grandchildren, Hayden and Griffin Marberry. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth Marberry; son-in-law Robert Naylor, parents and siblings. A visitation will be held at 9:00 am October 7, 2017 with a memorial service to follow at 10:00 am at Legacy Pointe in Waukee, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa Dorothy’s name.
