Dorothy Young

September 1, 1907 — June 29, 2006

Dorothy was born September 1, 1907 in Madison County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Myrtle (Edgington) Kirkland. She was a 1925 graduate of Macksburg High School and later married Chester Young on June 3, 1925. Dorothy died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at the Winterset Care Center North in Winterset. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Chester in 1976; a daughter, Cleo Welling (Dick); a daughter-in-law, Alice Young; a grandson Jeffrey Welling; and her seven siblings, Bernice Young, Harlan Kirkland, Grace Younkin, Worth Kirkland, Floyd Kirkland, Cleve Kirkland, and Ralph Kirkland. Dorothy was a farmwife and homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winterset and formerly was a member of United Methodist Church of Macksburg. She was a member of the Garden Club and the Current Topic Club. Dorothy was an excellent cook. She loved flowers and was good at flower arranging. She also enjoyed china painting. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, George Young of Paonia, CO, Darlene Eivins (Earl) of Colorado Springs, CO, Beverly Basham (Gene) of Bristol, TN, Evelyn Pearson (Jipe) of Knoxville, IA, and Bette Thompson (John) of Bolivar, MO; 17 grandchildren, Mary, Gwen, Judy, Jill, Steven, Susan, Bruce, Brian, Lori, Danny, Robin, Diane, Shelley, Sharla, Melanie, Scott, and Michael; 27 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren. Visitation: rural Macksburg, Iowa. Service: Memorial contributions may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Macksburg. Memorial: 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, where family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., July 2, 2006 at the funeral home.
