Douglas "Doug" Matthews

A service for Douglas G. Matthews was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Visitation was after 12:00 Friday with family present 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Words of comfort were provided by Mr. Glenn Rohden of Paton, Iowa. Honorary bearers were: Randy Wright, Matt Cornelius, LeRoy Sherlock, Dennis Beaver, Rod Tripp, Tom Tobin and Greg Stough. Casket bearers were: Mike Healy, Ben Sanders, Curtis Carstens, Duane Delp, Lucas Shipley, Gary Betts, Bruce Keeney and Glenn Rohden. Marjorie Vannatta was the pianist and Dick Bardole was the soloist. Hymns for Doug's service were: What A Friend We Have In Jesus, In The Garden, Wings Of A Dove, Just As I Am and Silent Night. Prior to the service at the cemetery was a luncheon at the St. Joseph Parrish Center three blocks east of the funeral home. Interment took place at Oakhill Cemetery in Nashua, Iowa following the lunch. Douglas Gayle Matthews, son of Marvin Leroy Matthews and Gwendolyn J. Troutner Matthews, was born March 15, 1957 in Charles City, Iowa and died December 10, 2012 in Jefferson, Iowa. Doug was 55. He grew up in Charles City where he worked at Fareway Store and graduated Charles City High School in 1975. After high school Doug graduated from North Iowa Area Community College. Doug enlisted in the Marine Corps, 1977, where he received several metals including Good Conduct Metal, Sea Service Deployment Metal and several other expert badges and was honorable discharged in 1981. Doug later worked at Hy-Vee as a meat cutter in Charles City and also Boone. He went to Lineman School when he was 40 years old. Doug moved to Jefferson 14 years ago and has worked at Midland REC for the past 13 years. Doug was a hard worker. He enjoyed being outdoors where he would fish, hunt and loved camping and gardening. Doug was a friendly person who helped others and he would do anything for anyone. Doug is preceded in death by his father Marvin, brothers Virgil and Steven Matthews, and his grandparents. Doug will always be lovingly remembered by his mother Gwen Matthews of Charles City; brother James Matthews and his wife Lynda of Yakima, Washington; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
