Dr. Laverne Wintermeyer

Laverne Arthur Wintermeyer, M.D., M.A., died on Tuesday, July 1st, 2014. He was 93 years of age. Dr. Wintermeyer was born on July 25, 1920 in Hartsburg, MO. The family moved to Jefferson City, MO, in his early childhood. He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1938. He graduated from Graceland College in 1941, and received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Iowa in 1943. He was in the U.S. Submarine Service during WWII. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1948 and taught music in the Iowa City Public Schools for 10 years before attending medical school. He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1961 and completed his internship at Iowa Methodist Hospital. He did a pediatric residency at Raymond Blank Childrens Hospital and pediatric neurology fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was director of pediatric education at Raymond Blank Hospital for children for 8 years before becoming the State Epidemiologist for the Iowa Department of Health from 1976 until retirement in 1994. He was active in clinical medicine over the years at Raymond Blank Childrens Hospital, Broadlawns Medical Center, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell of 51 years on March 8, 1996. He is survived by a son Keith Wintermeyer, MD., and daughter Tamra Hawley, four grand children; Carson Hawley, Pierce Hawley, Stephanie DeFilippo, and Kristi Wintermeyer, one great-grandson; Aydon Thompson. He was proud of his profession in medicine and music, and enjoyed helping people. He was very devoted to and proud of his family. A celebration of Lavernes life will be held on July 25, 2014 from 1:00-3:00 PM at Mercy Park Activity Center, 1131 3rd Street, Des Moines.
