Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday July 28, 2016 at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson with burial at Highland Twp. Cemetery in Churdan. Visitation will be on Wednesday after 1:00 p.m. with the family present from 5 until 7:00 p.m.Duane Edward Young, son of James Hugh and Marie C. (Kelley) Young was born August 1, 1924 in Jefferson, Iowa. Duane died July 23 at the age of 91. His early years were spent in Churdan, Jefferson, and Greenbrier Township. In 1943 he graduated from Churdan. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 being honorably discharged in 1946. Duane married Dorothy Picht in 1947 and they were the parents of four children, Cherin, Catharine, Thomas, and Barbara. In 1968 he married Delores Semke and her four children Dennis, Terry, Connie, and Mike joined the family. Duane retired from farming in 1970 and became a full time electrician with his business Young Electric. Duane served on the Churdan school board, the Elevator board,and was Commander of the American Legion Post 198 in Churdan for a time. He was a proud veteran; the Memorial Day ceremony was especially important to him . After retiring from the electrical business Duane helped Roger Custer farm, drove for Hamiltons, but mostly became an avid golfer. One of his favorite interests was the Lakeside Golf Course which he helped start in 1978. He volunteered for many tasks, never failing to help out at anytime; it was his baby. He served on the board for three terms and as president for one year. He built No. 6 green from scratch and rebuilt No 1 and No 3 greens. In 1988 he received his Superintendents card and served in that capacity for two years. He was awarded Lifetime membership by the club members and the board. He was an avid dancer all through his life and spent many a step at Lake Robbins enjoying the music with friends. In 2014 Duane moved to The Gardens. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Dorothy and Delores, sister Joan LeGore and her husband Boyd, Virginia Paup Vernon and her husband Ed; nephew Dennis LeGore; grandson James Nelson; and grandson-in-law Doug Rehfeld. His memory will be treasured by his children: Cherin Lee (Bob) of Cedar Falls; Cathy Nelson of Iowa City; Tom Young (Ilene) of Olathe, KS; and Barb Hobart (Doug) of Grimes; step children: Dennis Semke (Marg) of Carroll; Terry Semke (Kathy) of Jefferson; Connie Semke of Jefferson; Mike Semke (Peggy) of Jefferson; grandchildren: Christy Nelson; Malissa Rehfeld; Any Schau (Jeff); Ben Young (Nichole); Emily Young; Katie Parmenter (Matt); Andy Hobart. Step grandchildren: Lori Semke; Ted Semke ( Lori); Tommy Semke (Makala); Erin Daniel (Nick); Dusty Farnsworth (Jenny); 9 great-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; sister Pat Hastings (Ken); nieces, nephews, other relatives, friend Betty Martin, and many friends. Memorials may be made to the family for later distribution to causes close to Bud's heart.
