Dwain Joseph Donnelly, 90 passed away peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2016, surrounded by his family. Dwain was born in Menlo, Iowa on March 10, 1926, to Nellie M. Donnelly (Morrison) and John C. Donnelly. After graduation from Casey High School in 1944, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, Company H, 2nd Infantry, 5th Division in WWII. Serving in both the European and Middle Eastern Theatres, Dwain earned many honors including three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart while bravely engaged in the Battles of Ardennes: Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and Central Europe. After returning home to Iowa, he furthered his education and became one of the founding fathers of his fraternity at Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. On November 19, 1955, he was joined in marriage with his beautiful bride and the love of his life, Ruth Cecilia Rottee. From this wonderful union came six children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Dwain very much loved every member of his family and was extremely proud of their many accomplishments. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1994 after a 38-year career. During his career he was granted a U.S. Patent for advancing logistics technology within the USPS. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans as well as a 60-year member of the NALC. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth; daughters, Mary Lee Donnelly-Glumac (Michael), Patricia Joan Van Veen and Ann Marie Donnelly; sons, Steven Joseph Donnelly and David Scott Donnelly (Jan); granddaughters, Carol Patricia Lindaman (Tyler), Kayla Marie Purdy (Bryan), Stephanie Joan Eckland (Thomas), Jessica Lynn Caligiuri (Aaron) and Kristin Lee Hukill; grandsons, David Michael Hukill (Cate), Steven Scott Donnelly (Jolee) and Mark Patrick Van Veen; great-granddaughters, Annabelle Lee Lindaman, Madelyn Rose Lindaman and Claire Elise Donnelly; great-grandson, Daniel Joseph Lindaman; brothers, Dale Donnelly and Edward Donnelly (Pat) and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his daughter, Carol Ann Donnelly; grandson, Robert Joseph Hukill; parents, John C. Donnelly and Nellie M. Donnelly (Morrison); sisters, Delores Barnhart and Karen Krogh (Ronald); brothers, Keith Donnelly, Donnie Donnelly, Larry Donnelly and Darrell Donnelly. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Urbandale with a Mass on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines. Interment will immediately follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
