Ernest Richard "Dick" Flack, son of Guy Flack and Lorene Becker Flack, was born July 6, 1922 in Highland Township, Greene County, Iowa, and died July 19, 2007, at his home in Vernal, Utah at the age of 85 years and 13 days. Dick attended rural school. He was united in marriage with Doris Arlene Merryman on May 24, 1947. They were parents of two children: Shiela and Steven. Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy March 17, 1948. He was honorably discharged March 16, 1953 with rank of Boatswain's Mate G Second Class. He enjoyed telling of his tour on the USS Missouri Battleship and being present for the signing of the Peace Treaty with Japan aboard that ship. Dick could make those memories come alive for all who would listen. He was a refrigeration engineer specializing in industrial refrigeration. Dick and Doris lived in Jefferson until 1959 when they moved to Colorado; returning to Jefferson in 1991 and then moving to Perry in 1994. After Doris' death, Dick moved briefly to Jefferson and then to Utah where he made his home with Shiela. Dick got his pilot's license after returning from the service. He dearly enjoyed flying, but also enjoyed touring by car, landscaping his properties, but most of all, he loved his family, not only his immediate family, but his entire extended family. Dick and Doris enjoyed 58 years of marriage before her death June 9, 2005. In addition to his wife, Dick was preceded in death by his parents, and grandchild Cory Flack; brothers Harold and Robert Flack; and sister Jeanette White. He is survived by his sister Pauline Richardson, son Steven Flack and his wife Dorie of Jefferson, Iowa; daughter Shiela LeBaron and her husband Leo of Vernal, Utah; step-daughter Karen Harrington of Ankeny, Iowa; 7 grandchildren: Troy Hartman and his wife Dana; Jeremy Swain and his wife Atheyna; Joshua Swain and his wife Melissa; Johnathan Swain and his wife Amber; Christian Richard Flack; Sarah Cariaso; and Marty Frie and wife Denise ; 10 great grandchildren; his sister Pauline Richardson of Jefferson, Iowa; sister -in-law Margaret Crowley of Kissimmee, Florida; and brothers-in-law Rex Merryman and his wife Patricia of Panama Beach, Florida; Reese Merryman of Burlington, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
