She was born on January 22, 1943, to Al and Harriet (Koopman) Goerdt in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. She later moved to Dyersville, Iowa, as a child. Eileen graduated from Xavier High School in Dyersville in 1961 and went on to graduate from the University of Iowa with a degree in history. While she was raising her four children, she began taking classes in accounting and eventually received her accounting degree at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She went on to earn her CPA and began working for Denman and Company in West Des Moines, Iowa in 1988. She retired from there in 2008. Eileen was an avid bridge player, as any of her partners would tell you. She enjoyed doing puzzles with anyone who was willing and was a stickler for proper grammar, her grandchildren can attest to that. She enjoyed spending time with family on her many family vacations to Lake Ottertail in Ottertail, Minnesota. She also enjoyed working at the St. Theresa food pantry in Des Moines. She was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church for 33 years. Family was everything to Eileen, and she was always at the ready when needed. She is survived by her children Lynn (Jeff) Lilly of Urbandale, Iowa, Michael (Julie) Hesselmann of St. Joseph, Missouri, Stephen (Beth) Hesselmann of Johnston, Iowa, and daughter-in-law Tammie Hesselmann of Dubuque, Iowa. Eileen had 12 grandchildren: Josh Curley, Ashley (Devin) Looney, Madison Hesselmann, Jadyn Hesselmann, Megan Lilly, Caroline Lilly, Jack Lilly, Louie Guardado, Samantha (Zac) Miller, Casey (Noah) Cameron, Sam Hesselmann, and Ellie Hesselmann. Eileen had two sisters, Inez (Dick) Bartlett and Jean (Chuck) Cecil, and five brothers, Leon Goerdt, Earl (Carol) Goerdt, Glen Goerdt, Alan (Lori) Goerdt and Russell Goerdt, in addition to a host of extended family and friends, especially Mary and Ken Conry. She was preceded in death by her parents and her oldest son, Mark. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, January 8, 2022, at St. Theresa Catholic Church is Des Moines, Iowa. Family and friends will be received from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm just prior to the funeral. Interment will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to DMARC food pantry and St. Theresa Catholic Church.
