Eloise Matilda Scarpino

November 25, 1923 — June 30, 2023

Eloise M. Schmidt Scarpino, 99, of Clive, Iowa died peacefully on June 30, 2023 at Wesley Acres Short-term Rehab.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines on Thursday, July 6th, 2023 at 10:30 am with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.


Eloise was born on November 25, 1923 in Greene County, Iowa to Genevieve and Henry Schmidt.   She lived in Greene County until high school graduation, attending schools in Grand Junction, Dana, and Paton.  She graduated from Paton High School in 1941 and went on to attend AIB College of Business in Des Moines for six months.  Due to the war, Eloise moved home to Paton and worked at Home State Bank.  She returned to Des Moines in May of 1944 to work at The Des Moines Register and Tribune for eight years, where she met Robert Scarpino.  They both bowled on the R & T bowling teams.


Eloise and Robert were married on September 16, 1950 at St. Ambrose Cathedral.  She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.


Eloise enjoyed various volunteer work including Mercy Hospital Guild, homeroom mother, St. Joseph Academy Parents Guild, and being a charter member of St. Mary of Nazareth parish.  She also worked part-time for the Des Moines Convention Bureau and Boesen the Florist.  Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, and crossword puzzles.  She and Bob enjoyed taking long car trips and cruise travel.


Eloise is survived by her daughter, Mary, her granddaughter, Leslie (Owen Levine), and her sister, Elaine Temple.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and brother, Lyle.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Holy Family Catholic School Foundation or Sacred Heart Church.
