Elsie Mckinney Manning - Winterset & Adel

Elsie (McKinney) Manning, 92, of Adel passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 9, 2015, at Mercy West Lakes Hospital in West Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Visitation will take place prior to the service at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Madison County. Elsie Manning was born Feb. 15, 1923, in St. Charles, Iowa, to Luther and Alma McKinney. Her marriage to Bert Manning took place on Aug. 20, 1939, in Winterset. They were married for 67 years until Bert passed away in 2006. Elsie had been a homemaker for many years and took pride in caring for her eleven children. During her later married years, she had convinced her husband to take dancing lessons as he was a little apprehensive, but once they started dancing he loved it. These were some of her favorite memories. Elsie enjoyed spending time with her husband watching geese out by the pond. She loved being with her family and reminiscing about the old times. A treasured pastime was looking at old pictures, and talking about the good ol' days. Her favorite television program was Everybody Loves Raymond, and she also enjoyed listening to Daniel O'Donnell music. She made friends everywhere she went; she could turn a stranger into a life-long friend. Mom loved going with her husband to jam sessions where he played music at various places. She always had a beautiful smile wherever she went, and embraced every moment she spent with family and friends. She cherished Bible studies held by her son Steve on Fridays. One of the activities she always looked forward to was playing bingo with her friends at assisted living. In addition to living in Adel, she was a longtime resident of Van Meter and Winterset. She is survived by her 10 children: Janet (Gene) Zika, Wayne (RuthAnn) Manning, JoAnn (Lee) Berry, Susan (Dwaine) Thompson, Stephen (Kathy) Manning, Joe (Kathy) Manning, Peg (Jim) Herman, Randy (Barb) Manning, Polly (Larry) Brandt, and Angel (Mark) Davis; and brother, Larry (Darlene) McKinney . She had numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren which are too many to mention, but she loved them all dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Alma McKinney; husband, Bert; son, Tom; and two brothers, Paul and Earl McKinney. She will be missed dearly by her family. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for macular degeneration research.
