Ethel Virginia Hunt Dixon, daughter of John William Hunt and Eliza Ellen Sedars, was born on May 27, 1912 in DeSoto, Iowa, and died Sunday, October 7, 2012 under to loving care of Community Hospice, at the age of 100 years, 4 months, 11 days. Ethel lived on her parents' farm and attended school at DeSoto. She graduated from the Adel high school in 1929. Too young to qualify for teaching, she returned to high school for a year of post graduate work. In 1930 she began teaching in the schools of Dallas County for eighty-seven dollars a month! She continued teaching until 1944. Ethel kept herself alert by attending summer sessions at Drake University and Iowa State Teachers College. On June 28, 1937 she was married to Mahlon Scott Dixon. "Scotty" worked on the Alaska Canadian Highway during World War II and in 1944 he was unloaded in San Francisco, CA being told to wait for his next assignment, which never came. Ethel traveled to the City by the Bay and became a cashier in the Federal Reserve Bank where she worked fornearly thirty years. She sorted currency for counterfeits. They were the parents of two children, son Mahlon Scott Jr. and daughter Ramona Carolyn. Ethel served as the nursery attendant of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of San Francisco, CA. The church played a large role in her life and she was an active and devoted member. In 1977 "Scotty" & Ethel moved to Cave Junction, OR. Ethel was active in elections, the Illinois Valley Garden Club, Senior Center, Kirby Museum, and The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Grants Pass, Oregon. Ramona died on February 1, 1971 and Mahlon Sr. on March 22, 1993. Ethel was also preceded in death by her parents; brother Henry Ervin Hunt; nine sisters Grace Hunt Grove; Alta Hunt Devore; Stella Hunt Conley; Lenore Hunt Westerbeck; Beatrice Hunt Buchanan; Anna Hunt; Alvoretta Hunt Berkemann; MaryHenze Johnson; and Ollie Henze Kauffman. Ethel is survivedby her son Mahlon Scott Dixon Jr. (Linda) of Jacksonville, FL; granddaughters Kerri Lynn Michaud of Apopka, FL; Natalie Anne Bell of Pittsburgh, PA; three great grandchildren, Landon, Avery and Carson Michaud of Apopka, FL.
