Eugene "Jr." Irwin

Eugene “Jr.” Charles Irwin, 93, of Redfield passed away Sunday, March 20, 2022 at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston. A memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M. at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel on Thursday, March 24, 2022. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. The burial of Jr.’s urn will take place on Friday March 25, 2022 at 9:30am at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, north of Van Meter. Eugene was born October 24, 1928 to Charles Eugene Irwin and Lillian Margaret (Shediwy) in Louisville, KY. Their family then moved to De Soto, IA where he graduated from De Soto Consolidated School District in the spring of 1944. Following school, he worked for the Rock Island Railroad for two years before enlisting into the United States Navy in February of 1946. Upon his return from the Navy he married Martha JoAnn Hidlebaugh on July 2, 1952. To this union four children were born, Sheryl, Pat, Maria, Kathy. Jr. worked a few years for Lennox Heating and Cooling before moving to Economy Forms Corp. where he worked for 29.5 years before retiring on December 31, 1990. Jr. had numerous hobbies, some of which included enjoying the outdoors by gardening, going for nice walks, or enjoying a nice day by fishing or camping. Jr. also enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams which were: the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears. Of all of his hobbies, he cherished the time spent with his family the most. His legacy will continue on in the hearts and minds of his loving wife, Martha; daughters, Sheryl (Paul) Fountas, Pat (Dave) Griffith, Maria (Jack) Gunoe and Kathy (Rodger) McLaughlin; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Isakson; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
