Evelyn Chromek

On Monday, August 24, Evelyn Chromek passed away peacefully at the age of 82. Evelyn was born on May 4, 1938 in Eddyville, Illinois to Roy Lauderdale and Myrtle (Barger) Lauderdale. She grew up on the family homestead in the Shawnee National Forest Preserve in Southern Illinois with her two sisters. Evelyn worked as an aide at the Elgin Mental Health Facility where she met her beloved husband Paul Chromek. She later became a seamstress at the same facility until her retirement with Paul to an acreage in Plattsburg, Missouri. They spent much of their time traveling, boating, and being active in their local community. Evelyn was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary organization. Her favorite pastimes included sewing, cooking, gardening, reading, and spending time out on Smithville Lake. Upon the death of her husband, Evelyn moved to Winterset, Iowa to be closer to her daughter, Elaine, and granddaughter Haley. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Myrtle Lauderdale, and her husband Paul. She is survived by her sisters, Mildred and Helen, her daughter Elaine, granddaughter Haley, five stepsons, Paul, Jim, Bob, Dick, and Len, along with a host of other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society in Evelyn’s name.
