Florence McNichols, 89, of Winterset died Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the Winterset Care Center South in Winterset. A visitation will be held Friday, March 18 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset with family present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19 at the First Christian Church in Winterset with burial to follow in the McDonald-Chase Cemetery near Winterset. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Winterset and online condolences may be left for the family at ochiltree.com. Florence Lenore McNichols, daughter of Merlyn and Alice (Parks) Guessford, was born July 20, 1926 in Newton, Iowa. She graduated Valedictorian from Kellogg High School in 1943. Florence continued her education at the Capital City Commercial College and obtained her Secretarial Accreditation in 1945 and work for the National Youth Administration. She met Wilbur William McNichols at a dance in the Tromar Ballroom in Des Moines. Some say it was love at first sight and the couple was married August 20, 1946 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Together they raised two children and were very active at the First Christian Church in Winterset, where Florence was a secretary for many years. She also worked for the Madison County Fair Board. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Winterset, the Christian Women’s Fellowship, and the Church Women United of Winterset. Florence enjoyed reading, playing cards and crocheting. She was a talented baker and was famous for her homemade donuts and pies. Florence loved to travel and visit her family. Above all else, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cherished nothing more than the time she was able to spend with her family. Florence is survived by her son, Mel (Sheryl) McNichols of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Marylyn (Thomas) Tuura of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Megan (Jesse) Ortega and their daughter, Adelaide of Houston, TX; grandson Logan Tuura of Salt Lake City, UT; sisters, Goldia Neveln of Cedar Rapids; Pearl Guessford of Kellogg; Ida Eivins of Lorimor; Merna Guessford of Kellogg; brother-in-law, Kenneth (Joyce) McNichols of Bondurant; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilbur in 2014 and her sister, Hester Wyatt.
