Frances Ruth Legrande

Frances Ruth LeGrande, 96, of Winterset, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at Winterset Care Center South in Winterset. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 30, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Associate Pastor Jeff Binns officiating. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Frances was born on April 28, 1920, in Adair County, IA (near Orient) to Jay C. and Susie Frances (Smith) LeGrande. The family moved to rural Winterset in 1929. She attended the Yale country school (Ord neighborhood) for 1 year, then to Macksburg and the Macksburg Consolidated Schools where she graduated in 1937. After attending Simpson College, Frances taught rural schools until 1947 when she was able to return to Macksburg and teach at the Macksburg School for 5 years. She then taught for the Winterset School District from 1953 until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, member of the Macksburg and WHS Alumni Associations, a local Birthday Club, and enjoyed flowers and nature, especially birds and squirrels. Frances is survived by her sister, Eugenia LeGrande of Winterset; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Friends may call 1 hour before service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Winterset Community Educational Foundation.
