Franklin Hayes

June 7, 1933 — August 31, 2023

Franklin “Jim” Hayes, affectionately named after his Uncle Franklin Van Gorp, passed away on August 31, 2023 at the age of 90. He was born on June 7, 1933 to Ralph and Janella “VanGorp” Hayes in Burlington, Iowa.

After Franklin graduated from Indianola High School he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War.  Following his honorable discharge, he enrolled in college at Iowa Wesleyan University, for accounting. He worked for the State of Iowa auditing county records. On July 28th 1963, he married the love of his life Coleen Boyle. They shared 60 wonderful years together.

Franklin’s curiosity about genealogy history was insatiable. He could spend hours immersed in books, making spreadsheets so he could later look up each person’s history, exploring the intricacies of different eras, and leading him to uncover remarkable family histories, connecting generations and preserving cherished memories.

Additional hobbies included puzzles, cooking, and model trains. Franklin’s enthusiasm for model trains was a source of delight for his children. He hand crafted a magnificent model train that became a cherished centerpiece in their home. In his garden, Franklin found solace and beauty in the hostas, his collection of around 100 hosta varieties was a testament to his green thumb and dedication. He thoroughly enjoyed classical music and he could often be found enjoying a “barley pop” on his patio.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Coleen; children Jeff (Janora), Jennifer and step-daughter Jana; 7 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Harold, Virginia, and Karl.
