Fred L. Stookey, 82, of Gilbert, Arizona (formerly Winterset, Iowa) passed away peacefully on April 14, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Caldwell Parrish Winterset Chapel. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel Cemetery near Patterson. A luncheon will be held at Farmers and Merchants Bank Community Room following the service at the cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Patterson United Methodist Church and online condolences can be left at caldwellparrish.com. Fred Lee Stookey, son of Wilbur and Viola (Schaefer) Stookey, was born November 8, 1936 in Polk County, Iowa. He attended schools in the Des Moines area and graduated from Des Moines Technical High School. Fred enlisted in the Army following high school. He was united in marriage with Belinda Ware on November 29, 1958 and one daughter was born to this union. Fred worked at Firestone Tire & Rubber for over 30 years before retiring in 1987. In his retirement, Fred enjoyed working at Farmers and Merchants Bank. He was a 4-H leader for over 30 years. Fred was a member of the Patterson United Methodist Church and the Madison County Coon Hunters Association. He loved being outdoors especially hunting with his friends and family. Fred and Belinda were avid Winterset Athletics fans and were honored as fans of the year in 2005-06. They moved to Arizona in the Apache Junction area in 2007. Fred was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend who cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. Fred is survived by his daughter, Kristin (Dan Hammond) Stookey of Gilbert, AZ; brother-in-law, Dennis Ware of Wisconsin; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Viola Stookey; his wife, Belinda Stookey; and a brother, Marvin (Jackie) Stookey.
