Freda Scanlan of Polk City passed away October 17, 2016. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 20, 2016 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee with burial at the Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Family will greet friends Wednesday, October 19 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel. Freda Leone Endres was born June 4, 1950 in Creston, IA to Lloyd and Dorothy (Farwell) Endres. Freda attended Greenfield Community Schools and graduated on May 17. On May 18th she married the love of her life, Pete Scanlan. Against the advice of Pete's parish priest, who said the relationship would never last, they married and 10 days later Pete was shipped to fight in the Vietnam War. A little over a year later upon his return home, they were married in the Catholic Church. This union brought forth five children: Paula, John, Chris, Rebecca, and Justin. Throughout Freda's life she enjoyed many activities: crocheting baby blankets, participating in Alter Rosary Society, Right to Life, gardening, baking bread, hosting dress up tea parties with her grandchildren, candy scavenger hunts, and attending every event, big or small, for her children and grandchildren. Freda never missed a sporting event, school play, parent's day, grandparent's day, holiday party, rain, sleet, snow or shine. She exercised all of these activities with unconditional love and enthusiasm. This group would bring Freda's greatest passion, her 14 grandchildren (with one on the way) and three great grandchildren. Freda's passions were her husband, her children, her grandchildren, friends and most importantly her faith. Anyone who knew Freda knew that she was a woman with a great depth of character that was admirable and reflective of the type of person she was. She always had a smile on her face and could tell you countless stories about her children and grandchildren. One of her truly greatest gifts was simply making you realize how special you were to her. She was quick to point out your strengths and didn't focus on the rest. She saw what was good in us and made us better people. If you were blessed to be in Freda's company you were often overwhelmed by the softness of her heart, which was second fierceness of her loyalty. Those left to cherish Freda's memory are her husband, Pete, her children Paula (Reggie) Johnson, John Scanlan, Chris (Martha) Scanlan, Rebecca (late husband Roy) Bingham, and Justin (Jamie) Scanlan, 14 grandchildren and one on the way, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Freda was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Dorothy Endres; her son-in-law, Roy Bingham; her grandson, Jonathon Scanlan; sisters Mickey Jameson and Dotty Teas. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Boniface Catholic Church. Online condolences may be left on this site.
