Gary Tyer, 71, of DeSoto, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 24, 2014 surrounded by his family at his residence in DeSoto. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, June 28, at the Winterset Community Church in Winterset, Iowa with Pastor Scott O'Conner officiating. Burial will be in the North McDonald Cemetery at Madison County, Iowa. Gary was born on October 8, 1942, at Winterset to Roscoe and Mary (Hendricks) Tyer. He had resided in Winterset for most of his life until moving to DeSoto to own and operate the Edgetowner Motel. He was also a retired carpenter contractor. Gary was a 1961 graduate of Winterset High School. He had been a member of the Winterset Optimist Club, the Iron Dukes car club, and was a retired member of the Winterset Fire Department. Gary is survived by his special companion, Glenda Zeliadt of DeSoto; sons, Gary Lee (Kori) Philipp and Kenny (Kim) Philipp both of Cedar Rapids; sister, Gayla (Ed) Coffman of West Des Moines; brothers, Dick Tyer and Tom (Ruth) Tyer both of Winterset; grandchildren, Sam Philipp, Bradi Philipp, Sawyer Philipp, Jack Philipp, Cara Lausen, Amanda Krumm, Thomas Philipp, and Roderick Philipp; and great grandchildren, Frances Lausen, Chayse Lausen, Cashton Krumm, Rockton Krumm, and Savannah Philipp. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Mary (Hendricks) Tyer; daughter, Kerry Philipp; and sister, Peggy Tyer. Visitation will be Friday, June 27, from noon to 8 PM at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 PM. Memorials may be given to his family for a future designation.
