Genevieve M. Motis

Genevieve M. Motis formerly of Des Moines, died May 9, 2016 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, Iowa at the age of 102. She was born June 10, 1913 in Seward, Illinois, the daughter of James and Gertrude (Menden) O'Malia. Genevieve graduated from Pecatonica, Illinois High School in 1931, attended the National Kindergarten College in Evanston, Illinois, Northern Illinois University, University of Colorado and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at the University of Illinois. Genevieve taught 3rd grade in Litchfield, Belvidere, and Rockford, Illinois. She married Dr. Charles Motis in Des Moines, Iowa June 29, 1946. Genevieve was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church for over 60 years, a member of the Women's Catholic League and Bishop Drumm Guild. She enjoyed reading, shopping, teaching and working in her yard. Survivors include a son James (Sharon) Motis of Ankeny, and daughter Colleen (Donald) Smith of Urbandale, five grandchildren, Kristin Barclay of Altoona, Lyndsay (Joseph) Vander Werf of Saint Charles, Brian (Lydia) Motis of Windsor Heights, Chad (Marni) Smith of Johnston and Brent (Sarah) Smith of Urbandale. Genevieve also leaves behind 16 great-grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four sisters. Services will be held Friday May 13, 2016 at 9:30 AM with visitation one hour before services at Our Lady of Peace Chapel at Bishop Drumm Care Center located in Johnston, Iowa. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Genevieve's name or to Cancer Research.
