Gladys Whitehead, 95, of Winterset (formerly of Lorimor) died Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Winterset Care Center North in Winterset. A visitation will be held 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 30, 2018, at Ochiltree Funeral Service, with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Ben Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Murray Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Lorimor and online condolences may be left at ochiltree.com. Gladys Faye Whitehead was born May 3, 1922, near Murray, Iowa; the daughter of Charles Henry and Edith Estella (Jones) Whitehead. She graduated from Lorimor High School with the class of 1940 and worked at many different jobs throughout her lifetime but most often as a caregiver and helper to others. Gladys was a member of the Lorimor Christian Church until its closing and later, the First Baptist Church of Lorimor. She enjoyed gardening, taking care of her lawn and flowers, fishing, watching sports and the many gatherings of family and friends. One of her proudest accomplishments was being a pitcher and outfielder on an Osceola, Iowa women’s softball team that won the 1949 Iowa Class B state championship. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Clarence; brothers, Ted (Mercedes) Whitehead and Charles (Isabelle) Whitehead; sisters, Alice (Lawrence) James and Mabel (Luther) Woods.
