Glen grew up on the family farm where he was born and graduated from Twin Rivers High School in 1970. Glen attended college at Iowa Central and went on to receive his Elementary Education teaching degree from UNI. Glen taught middle school at St. Mary’s in Humboldt, substituted at Seton Middle School in St Joe and also taught several years in Texas. Glen had a spirit of adventure and lived many places including Iowa, Texas, Colorado, Florida, Washington and most recently Oregon. He was witty, curious and inquisitive. It was common for him to be surrounded by books of nature, foreign languages, science, music and art as he was constantly learning; and felt compelled to share his insight on various topics. Glen also had an Associate’s Degree in Horticulture. Glen was passionate about nature and plants and spent hours and hours planting. His favorites were Asiatic and daylilies, hostas and chrysanthemums. He had hundreds of varieties and colors which he enjoyed cross-breeding and coming up with new and more beautiful breeds. Glen was generous with his time, talents and possessions; often giving away nearly all he owned. He was especially devoted to his mother as was witnessed by his willingness to move back to Iowa and be her primary caregiver for over eight years. His family will always be grateful for his generosity. When his mother died, Glen took off on another adventure, moving to Orlando, Florida where he worked for Lowe’s as a Plant Specialist for a number of years. This opportunity allowed him to share his knowledge of horticulture and through his work he received many awards. Glen moved back to Portland two years ago with his backpack and a few necessary items and often commented on how lush and beautiful it was there. Glen’s sense of adventure, thirst for learning, inquisitiveness and his kindness will always be a treasure to his family and those who knew him. Those left to honor Glen’s memory are his 13 siblings, Sr. Marcine Kellner, OSF of Cedar Rapids, IA; Ed (Louise) Kellner of Cainsville, MO; Tom (Joan) Kellner of Livermore, IA; Ruth (Carroll) Primrose of Shellsburg, IA; Marilyn Spencer of Humboldt, IA; Cindy (Frank) Everett of Humboldt, IA; Jim (Ruth) Kellner of Rutland, IA; Luke (Sharon) Kellner of Bode, IA; Donna (Dave) Salz of Algona, IA; George (Sue) Kellner of Bode, IA; Karla (Dan) McKibban of Humboldt, IA; Marcine Schoo of Island Lake, IL; and Susie (Dean) Lallier of Algona, IA.
