Family will be present to receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services: 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 2nd at the First Baptist Church in Winterset. Burial: Winterset Cemetery with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and the American Legion Post 184 of Winterset. Memorials: May be directed to the VFW Post 8142 of Winterset. Glenn Allen Scoles was born on a farm in Riverton, Iowa on March 22, 1918, the son of David and Jessie (Buttercase) Scoles. He was a sergeant in the Civilian Conservation Corps before going into the service in January of 1942. Glenn later married Phyllis Beerbower on August 5, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri. He served in the Army during World War II as a Paratrooper in the Pacific. He was in New Guinea, Lae, and the Philippines, receiving two bronze stars. Glenn worked at the Winterset City Hall for over 26 years then became State Auditor for 8 years until he retired to the Ozarks, where he lived for 14 years. Glenn became a Christian in 1948. He was active in the Bethlehem Church in Missouri and joined the First Baptist Church of Winterset, serving as Treasurer for 17 years. He was a life member of the VFW Post 8142 of Winterset and a charter member of the VFW Honor Guard, which he helped start in 1946. Glenn was also a member of the American Legion. Glenn volunteered 9 years in Yuma, Arizona each winter, where he helped repair a church on the Indian Reservation. While he was there, he also helped with Operation Santa Claus, food banks, and mission for the homeless. He moved back to Winterset in 1989 and continued his volunteerism. He helped the Polk County Food Bank for 15 years and volunteered at the Madison County Historical Complex and Middle River Hospice. Glenn went home to be with Jesus Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the Madison County Health Care System in Winterset. He was 92. Glenn is survived by his wife of 68 years, Phyllis; a son, James A. Scoles and wife, Jeanette of Winterset; 2 daughters, Renee M. Simmons and husband Dennis (who was like his other son) of Winterset and Susan Gruber of Winterset; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.
