Glenn Tipton Woods Jr.

A committal service for Glenn will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 13th at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry. The family welcomes anyone wishing to honor Glenn's memory. Hastings Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of these arrangements. Glenn Tipton Woods Jr. formerly of Perry, Iowa, departed this life on June 5, 2019, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Missouri. By God's grace, Glenn was given a long and productive life. Glenn was born to Glenn T. Woods and Ruby Gilmore Woods at the family farm near Madison, Missouri on March 20, 1921, and was the eldest of five children and the last surviving member of his family. After graduation from Madison (MO) High School in 1939, Glenn worked on the family farm before moving to California. In 1942 Glenn joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS McFarland as a machinist mate 1st class in the Pacific during WWII. After discharge from the military, Glenn married Pauline Baxter on November 17, 1947 in Pasadena, California. The family resided in California and Wyoming before moving to Iowa. Settling in Perry, Glenn worked for many years for the Lauterbach Chevrolet dealership until his retirement. Glenn was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and active in the local chapter #85 of the American Legion holding various offices including Chaplin and Post Commander. Glenn was always ready to lend a helping hand to any friend or neighbor in need and a dependable friend in any circumstance. Glenn was much sought after as a mechanic with a reputation for his persistence in diagnosing and repairing almost any vehicle. He worked many long hours including overtime to provide for his family. In retirement Glenn continued to serve in the American Legion operating the weekly bingo for many years. He also enjoyed meeting for morning coffee with other members of the "Perry Bowl Liar's Club." Glenn liked to travel and he attended several WWII USS McFarland conventions. He also enjoyed reading and walking his beloved dogs Missy and Harrison. In later years, Glenn moved to Missouri to be closer to family. After several years of residing with his daughter and son-in-law, Glenn relocated to the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron where he enjoyed the camaraderie of other resident veterans. Glenn is survived by his daughter Sherri Woods Larkins (husband David), Daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife Pauline on February 21, 2000 and a step-son Edwin Earl Haynes and grandson Dana Cole Haynes.
