Greg Lee Thompson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and respected member of the community, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. Born on March 21, 1954, in Charles City, he was the son of Max and Ruth (McRoberts) Thompson.
Greg's journey began in Cedar Falls, where he graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1972, with his Eagle Scout rank. He continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing in 1977. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Jeanne Doyle, whom he married on June 23, 1979.
Greg's professional career was marked by dedication and a strong work ethic. He started working for Hy-Vee at the age of 16 and remained with the company for 31 years. His leadership and commitment to excellence were evident at Hy-Vee stores in Iowa City, Urbandale, Centerville, Mount Pleasant, East Euclid, and the 35th Street store in West Des Moines.
After his time at Hy-Vee, Greg embarked on a new chapter in his life by joining Action Coach, with Accelerated Business Coach being his new business. As a business coach for small to medium-sized businesses, he shared his wealth of knowledge and experience with clients in Des Moines and the surrounding areas. Greg's passion for helping others succeed was instrumental in the growth and development of numerous businesses and friends.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Greg had a zest for life and a wide range of interests. He found joy in golfing, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes (proud board member of the Polk County I-Club), and supporting the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets. Greg's dedication to his work was only surpassed by his devotion to his family and faith. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events and creating lasting memories.
Throughout his life, Greg fostered deep connections and lasting friendships. He formed lifelong bonds with his fraternity brothers in Phi Sigma Epsilon and valued the camaraderie and support they shared.
