Gregory Alan Hicklin, “The Dude”, 69, of Urbandale Iowa, died peacefully in his sleep on July 18, 2020. Greg was born January 6, 1951 in Des Moines, IA at Methodist Hospital to parents Robert V and Francis E Hicklin. A product of the Des Moines Public School System, Greg received his undergraduate and medical degree from the University of Iowa (Go Hawks). While a resident in Iowa City, Greg met and later married the love of his life Melanie in 1976. Following the birth of his first Son, Michael, in 1979 the three moved to their forever home in Urbandale, IA where memories are continuing to be made. The family lovingly welcomed son John in 1982. Greg was a man of many hobbies. If he wasn’t working you could find him at the family farm in St. Charles with Melanie riding his gator, looking at trees and taking care of his bees with his dog Henry at his side. The man loved to be with his family and enjoyed traveling, fishing, cooking, and drinking fine wine. He was never without a saying or a joke, and no matter how corny they would bring a smile to your face. His laughter was infectious and will be missed by all who called him a friend. Greg dedicated many years of his life serving the Des Moines community and was a well-respected and beloved physician at the Iowa Clinic. Board certified in Pulmonary, Critical Care, Internal, Sleep and Hyperbaric Medicine; Greg was always a teacher, forever learning and helping those around him learn and better themselves. He took great care of his patients, but got the most joy from getting to know them. Greg will be sorely missed and survived by his wife Melanie, children: Mike and John, daughter-in-law Amy, grandchildren: Michael (Trey) and Bennett, brothers Bobby, Tom, and sister Judy, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. A small private gathering of family will be held on Wednesday July 22nd. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving generously to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, or the Iowa ARL in Greg’s name.
