Harold "Hutch" Duane Hedges, son of Miles Newton Hedges and Hazel Gertrude Hutchison Hedges, was born August 6, 1923 on a farm north of Scranton, Iowa and died February 25, 2006 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 19 days. Harold attended Scranton High School and graduated with the class of 1941. Harold was drafted into the United States Army in 1943, serving his country in the Philippines and New Guinea as a cook on the 1st Convalescent Hospital U.S. Army Ship. He was honorably discharged in 1946. On August 11, 1944, Harold was united in marriage to Glatha Neota Johnston. They lived north of Scranton, farming the Gibson and then Foster farms. They then farmed near Jamaica for a year before making their home for the next 48 years in Greenbrier Township. Harold and Glatha were the parents of four children: Renee, Randy, Deena and Darcia. In addition to farming, Harold kept busy as a 4-H Leader in Greenbrier Township, served on the ASCS County Commission for 10 years and was also a Greenbrier Township Trustee. He was a member of the Greenbrier United Methodist Church. Harold loved driving ponies, fishing and 2 cylinder tractors. He also liked a great game of pool, and cribbage. But, most of all Harold enjoyed time spent with family and friends. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson Zaine; sister: Lorene Fain and her husband Rex; and his son-in-law Merle Lewis. He is survived by his wife Glatha of Jefferson; son: Randy (Linda) of Jefferson, Iowa; daughters: Renee Lewis of Jefferson; Deena Frederick (Rodney) of Bagley and Darcia Crooks (Dennis) of Mason City; twelve grandchildren: Shauna Lewis (Domenic Sansotta, special friend), of Arvada, Colorado; Natalie Kallenbach (Rich) also of Arvada, Colorado; Joshua Hedges of Jefferson; Kristina Smelser (Matthew) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; John Hedges of Bagley; James Hedges of Ames; Daniel Frederick (Jodi) of Bagley; Carolyn Renshaw (Brandon) of Waukee; Karen Bappe (Jeffrey) of Madrid; Hillary Reich (Brian) of Mason City; Stacy Minde (Isaac) of Mason City and Wade Crooks also of Mason City; nine great-grandchildren: Kyla and Heather Kallenbach; Ashlyn and Ethan Frederick; Brock Renshaw; Benjamin and Aliza Bappe; Brooklyn Reich and Izabella Minde; brother-in-law Darrell Johnston of Jefferson; many other relatives and a host of friends.
