Harold ‘Hal’ Jackson, 92, of Winterset, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.

Hal was born on February 17, 1931 to John and Callista “Maggie” (Page) Jackson in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. He graduated from Creston High School in 1950. He went to Kansas State University for one semester and played football. In 1951, Hal enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country honorably in the Korean War as a recon specialist until 1954 after being medically discharged. Following his time in the Air Force, Hal attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a B.S. in Zoology in 1958. He continued college and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1962. Hal married Harriett Jansen on March 26, 1954 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.

Hal was very involved in the Winterset Community, a community he called home for over 60 years. In 1962, he began working at Schuster Pharmacy in Winterset. Hal purchased the store which was renamed Jackson Pharmacy in 1972. He ran the store until he sold it in 1999. He continued to run Jackson Medical for several years and later sold. The name and business continues today. Hal served on the Winterset Parks and Rec Board, the MATURA Board, Madison County Veterans Affairs Board, the IPA (Iowa Pharmacist Association), and served at the Presbyterian Church on session and the property and finance committee. He was a member of the Winterset American Legion and VFW, Winterset Lion’s Club, Kiwanis Club, and was involved with the Covered Bridge Festival. Hal and Harriett were named the Covered Bridge King and Queen in 2010.

Throughout his life, Hal remained a constant supporter of the University of Iowa Athletics and the College of Pharmacy. He held season tickets to the football games starting in 1963 and assisted with the White Coat Ceremony for the College of Pharmacy. He mentored many students in the program. In his free time, Hal enjoyed playing poker with a bunch of old vets as he would say. He also loved spending time with his wife, playing bridge and doing the many activities she wanted to do. He loved watching his kids grow up and watching them participate in sports, even traveling long distances to see them after they were grown. They all went on and graduated from college, a fact Hal was extremely proud of.

Hal is survived by his children, Doug (Connie) Jackson of Fort Collins, CO, Bennett (Lisa M.) Jackson of Anchorage, AK, Kathy (Delton) Sas of Denver, CO, Daniel H. (Melissa A.) Jackson of Plano, TX, and Brad (Carol) Jackson of Altoona, IA; grandchildren, Nate (Megy), Nicole, Rochelle, Jaymie (Kyle), Anthony, Anna, Gavin, Isabella, Kyle, and Olivia; and great grandchildren, Mia, Zoey, Ella, Kenzi, Ava, Elliana, Baylor, and Benson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett; his parents, John and Maggie; step-mother, Ferne Jackson; step-father, Ernest Kuhns; brother, Al Jackson; step-brother, Gary Jackson; and step-sister, Karen Herr.
