Harold E. Janssen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and war veteran, passed on December 20, 2021 at the age of 90. He was born June 21, 1931 to Margaret (Mertes) and William Janssen, in Stuart, Iowa where he grew up going to his father’s bowling alley. At a young age of 8, Harold, only 47” tall was acknowledged in the Des Moines Register for his high scoring bowling skills. At 16, he owned and operated his own filling station, which was located on the east side of Des Moines, Iowa. He then became a skilled meat cutter for Safeway, a finish carpenter, engine mechanic, and an avid boat enthusiast. On September 4, 1950, he married the love of his life, Betty (Long) and, shortly after, enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps to serve in the Korean War. Harold earned a Purple Heart after being wounded in action and spent his life passionate about the Marines and his time serving our country.
Harold and his wife, Betty, purchased Krumm Sales & Service, an outdoor power equipment company that became an icon of the Des Moines area for over 55 years. There, they taught their three sons, Pat, Mike, and Terry everything about the family business.
Harold and Betty’s second home was at the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri where they enjoyed water activities with family and many friends. Harold was very talented with his hands; “If Harold can’t fix it, no one could!” He enjoyed teaching waterskiing behind one of his many boats. His collection included a 1956 wooden Chris-Craft and two Century Coronado classic boats.
Harold is survived by his wife Betty (Long) Janssen; sons Patrick, Dr. Michael (Dr. Sharon), and Terry (Kathy) Janssen; grandchildren: Nicole (Josh) Colwill, Dr. Matthew (Catie) Janssen, Dr. Madisen (Michael) Olsen, Zachary Janssen, Jennifer (Ryan) Berning, Johnathan Janssen, Katelynn Janssen, and great-grandchild, Camden Berning.
Harold will be deeply missed by his family and friends. To honor his life, a visitation will be held on January 2, 2022 from 4pm-7pm at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory located in Urbandale, Iowa. A funeral mass will be held January 3, 2022 at 10am at Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa.
