Harry M. Cox, 63, of Winterset, died Sunday, September 5, 2010, surrounded by his loving family at Winterset Care Center North after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 7, at Ochiltree Funeral Service, with the family present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery, near St. Charles, with military honors to be performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184 both of Winterset. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice of Winterset. Harry was born April 23, 1947 in Madison County, Iowa to Lee and Joan (Janes) Cox. He spent his childhood in Dayton, Iowa and graduated in 1965 from Dayton High School. After high school he joined the National Guard and served in the United States Army. Later he joined his family in Winterset where he lived, with the exception of 11 years when he resided in Loveland, CO, where he loved to be! He retired in 2009 from McAninch as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Operators Union Local #234 of Des Moines. Anyone who knew him would agree, he was a gentle kind selfless man who was giving and loyal. Harry is survived by his mother, Joan Cox of Winterset; his son, Shane Cox and wife, Renee of Forest City, five grandchildren, Parker, Ayden, Lani, Whitney, and Alexa; two brothers, Gene Cox and wife, Janelle and Marvin Cox and wife, Denise both of Winterset; a sister, Dixie Grimes of Des Moines and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Cox.
