Hazel Sterling Dye, 96, of Dallas Center was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, and died on December 25 in Johnston. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, December 29 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel with burial at Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Friday at the funeral home where family will greet friends from 5 to 7 PM. Hazel was the 5th child of Theodore and Bessie (Decker) Sterling, born on February 13, 1916. The family had moved to Canada to homestead farmland. When Hazel was 5 the family moved back to Derby, Iowa. Later they moved to Adel, where Hazel and her siblings attended Adel school. After finishing school, Hazel went to work for the Nile Kinnick family where she met her soul mate, Darroll Dye, who worked for the Kinnicks also. Hazel and Darroll were married on New Years day in 1933. They had 54 great years together before Darroll died in 1987. They farmed together in the Waukee and Dallas Center areas. In 1970 they purchased their own farm in Dallas Center. Hazel was involved in the farming, she had a big garden, lots of flowers and trees in their large yard. She was a great cook and did lots of baking and canning. She was a 4H leader, worked with the Women's Fellowship of the Presbyterian Church and various other groups. She was able to stay on the farm for 15 years after the loss of Darroll. She moved to Bishop Drumm Care Center in 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Bessie Sterling, all nine siblings, her husband Darroll and son-in-law, Nick Button. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Bob) Collins and Joyce Button, 4 grandchildren, Monty (Becky) Button, Nicki Jo Button, Robin Collins, and Rodney (Ann) Collins, 5 great grandchildren, Jeff (Natalie), Karen, Lisa, Katelyn, and Spencer, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial Contributions may be left to Dallas County Fair or Animal Rescue League of Des Moines.
