Helen Powers

Helen Powers, 81, of Winterset, died Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Helen has been cremated and no services are planned at this time. Memorials may be directed to her family. Helen Louise Kirk was born November 5, 1933 in Lorimor, Iowa, the daughter of John R. and Wilma (McChesney) Kirk. Her marriage to Robert L. Powers took place on January 16, 1953 in Winterset, Iowa. During her working years, she worked as a secretary at Union State Bank, a job she held for 44 years. After her retirement, she worked for Fiserv in Des Moines for several years. Helen was a member of the Eastern Star, enjoyed playing solitaire, working in her flower gardens and sitting on her deck enjoying the outdoors. She was a wonderful cook and baker. All this said, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family and cherished the time spent with them. Helen is survived by a son, Steve (Risé) Kirk of Winterset; five grandchildren (Travis (Klarisa) Kirk of Elizabeth Town, KY, Dustin Kirk of Corning, Lacey (Trent) Byler of Indianola, David Drake of Indianola and Samantha Wright of Des Moines) and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by three siblings, Larry (Micki) Kirk of Lorimor, Patricia (David) Grandfield of Lorimor and Barbara (Bill) Waller of Oskaloosa; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Kirk of Marshalltown, Sandra Kirk and Ann Kirk both of Lorimor; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1990; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Raymond (Joyce) Kirk, Benjamin Kirk, Max Kirk and Ronald Kirk.
