Visitation: Helen Roberta Boyd was born July 15, 1921 in Winnebago, NE, the daughter of Bert and Helen Grace (Niebuhr) Boyd. During WW II, Helen joined the Women's Army Corp and served in New Guinea and the Philippines. Following the war, she became a registered nurse and taught at the University of Minnesota and Augustana College. She also served as executive secretary of the South Dakota Board of Nursing and as Associate Chief of Nursing Education in the Veterans Administration. Helen collaborated with the Presentation Sisters to develop one of the earliest schools of practical nursing in the state of South Dakota. She is survived by a nephew, Kenneth Boyd and his wife, Lynne of Winterset; a niece Carol Schweniger and her husband, John of Leawood, KS and several great-nieces and nephews. Helen had numerous interests and was an avid bird watcher. She moved to Winterset from Sioux Falls, SD in 2007. Helen died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at the Country Haven Guest Home in rural Winterset. She was 88. Service: Helen was preceded in death by her parents; an older brother, Richard and a twin brother, Harold. Memorial: No services are planned. Burial will be in the Sloan Cemetery, Sloan, Iowa.
