A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 22 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 21, with family present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare. A Vigil Service will begin at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the VFW Auxiliary and/or Middle River Hospice of Winterset. Helen Virginia Maxwell was born May 27, 1928 in Polk County, Iowa; the daughter of John and Gertrude (George) Maxwell. Her marriage to Norman A. Young took place on December 21, 1947 at the United Methodist Church in St. Charles. He preceded her in death in 1999. Helen was a homemaker and farmwife. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the VFW Auxiliary. She was well-known for her rose garden and was an excellent cook. She enjoyed decorating and would often decorate tables at the senior citizen center for birthdays and holidays. Helen died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the Winterset Care Center North in Winterset. She was 83. Helen is survived by her children, Norman (Gail) Young of Truro, Virginia (Raymond) Erpelding of San Antonio, TX, and Anna Marie (Ernest) Casner of Des Moines; siblings, Larry Maxwell of Winterset, Mary Ann Fletcher of Melcher, and Millie Ray of Branson, MO; five grandchildren, Eric (Denise), Benjamin, Damon (Christy), Crystal (Scott), Clayton (Cori); and four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Matthew, Evelyn, and Tyler. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman; siblings, Freddie, Richard, and Lonnie.
