Herbert Munsterman

June 16, 1921 — November 4, 2005

Herbert Francis Munsterman, son of Henry Munsterman and Antonette Shalla Munsterman, was born June 16, 1921 in Fairbury, Nebraska and died November 4, 2005 at the age of 84 years. Raised on a farm in Lanham, Nebraska, Herbert attended school in Odell, Nebraska, graduating from Odell's high school in 1936. He married Phyllis L. Benne on August 10, 1946 at Glasco, Kansas. Following their marriage, Herbert and Phyllis made their home in Lanham, Nebraska, later moving to Illinois and finally to Perry, Iowa. They were the parents of eight children: Jeanne, Gayle, William, Daniel, Marcia, Herbert, Jr., Wade and Beth. After a thirty year career on the Rock Island Railroad, Herbert retired in 1981. He spent his retirement enjoying his grandchildren, reading and gardening. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis; 5 brothers: Henry, William, Richard, Robert, and Alfred; and 2 sisters: Lucille Mallean and Olga Munsterman. He is survived by his 4 daughters: Jeanne Lawson and her husband Darrell of Illinois, Gayle Munsterman of Perry, Marcia Stech and her husband Rodney also of Perry and Beth Hayden and her husband Gerald of Oakland, California; his 4 sons: William of San Mateo, California, Daniel of Ames, Herbert, Jr. and his wife Maria of Illinois and Wade of Perry; his 8 grandchildren: Anthony Lawson, Sarah Stech Zimmer and her husband Joshua, Melina Callahan, Schuyler Hayden, Olivia Hayden, Shelby Munsterman, Quincy Hayden and Jared Munsterman; and his 2 great-grandchildren: Samuel and Adrianna. A visitation will be held Monday, November 7, 2005 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry with the family present to greet friends from 6 until 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at a later date with burial at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Lanham, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the Perry Public Library and left at the funeral home.
